Join FTA’s Climate Challenge

Published on: October 12, 2021

FTA launched the Sustainable Transit for a Healthy Planet Climate Challenge in June to support the Biden-Harris Administration’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50 percent by 2030. The Challenge calls on transit agencies nationwide to pledge to develop or support climate action strategies with measurable goals to achieve GHG targets.

Last week, FTA Administrator Nuria Fernandez wrote about the challenge in the October edition of American Public Transportation Association’s (APTA) Passenger Transport and encouraged transit agencies nationwide to join us.

More than 70 transit agencies nationwide have signed up so far to participate in the Challenge. Participants will submit their strategies in the form of climate action, sustainability or electrification plans to FTA by April 15, 2022.

To encourage and assist plan development, FTA has co-hosted two associated webinars with APTA and released a climate action plan template.

Learn more about the initiative access climate resources and sign up for the challenge on the Climate Challenge website. The deadline to sign up for the challenge is October 29, 2021. Challenge results and transit agency success stories will be showcased on Earth Day 2022.
