Join Phase 2 of FTA’s Sustainable Transit for a Healthy Planet Climate Challenge

Published On: January 22, 2023

FTA invites transit agencies to participate in the second phase of the Sustainable Transit for a Healthy Planet Climate Challenge, which encourages bold action to further reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from public transportation. Launched in April 2022, FTA seeks to increase participation by 25% to support President Biden’s GHG reduction goals.

During Phase 1 of the Challenge, 171 transit agencies signed up and 76 transit agencies submitted plans outlining strategies to reduce GHG emissions, such as converting fleets to electric buses, making facilities more energy efficient, and generating power through renewable energy sources.

Those who have not yet signed up are encouraged to join FTA to participate in the Challenge. Agencies of all sizes are welcome, and new or existing sustainability, climate action, electrification or zero-emission transition plans are accepted.

Challenge participants can receive technical assistance in developing their plans and strategies, and plans submitted by March 1, 2023, are eligible for recognition during FTA’s Earth Day celebratory event.
