Joint Office of Energy and Transportation Announces Federal Funding to Support Transition to Electric Bus Fleets, Other Electrified Transportation Projects

The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, recently announced the availability of $54 million in federal funding to support projects that will expand community access through electrified “green” transportation. The Communities Taking Charge Accelerator program will drive innovation in equitable clean transportation by investing in projects that expand access to electric vehicles, including accelerating the transition to e-bus fleets and advancing charging systems to optimize use of the grid.

The funding, administered by the Joint Office through DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, will support:

• expanding e-mobility solutions through electrified micro, light and medium-duty transit fleets
• expanding charging access for privately owned electric vehicles
• managed charging for clean, reliable energy

Eligible recipients include academic, nonprofit, for-profit, and government entities (including transit agencies) for planning, demonstration or deployment projects that drive innovation in equitable clean transportation. Before submitting a proposal for this opportunity, applicants must submit a concept paper by May 20, 2024.
